Rug Pads

The right type of pad underneath your rug provides many benefits from keeping it from slipping on the floor or buckling, to acting as a “shock absorber” for foot traffic to lessen the wear on the rug’s fibers.

These are the best pads for your rugs (and for your floors too).

The Importance of a Pad

A rug pad is essential to keeping your rug attractive and to extend the life of your rug. Rug pads allow dirt to pass through the rug, and prevent abrasion caused by sharp dust particles sitting under the rug. Without a rug pad, foot traffic can cause significant damage to an area rug, and the soil is getting ground into the fibers making it dirty faster.

We have two types of pads available.

Felt Pad: Machine Made; Felted; 100% post industrial recycled synthetic fibers; Non Washable Latex

Foam Pad: Ultra Grip Non Slip Rug Pad – allows for air circulation that prevents the buildup of dust or moisture and allows for easy vacuuming.

Urine Treatment: Rugs that have been soiled by your beloved pets need additional care and attention and cannot be cleaned in your home. We can treat even the most delicate rugs to remove the urine or other substances. Treating urine requires additional detergents, soaking and rinse time – which require equipment that just won’t fit on our trucks. Please be aware, in some cases the urine has already oxidized, or a stain has been set, which causes permanent color changes in the rug that we cannot reverse. We cannot guarantee complete removal of the visible spot, but the substance and odor will definitely be gone.

Oriental Rugs on Top of Wall-To-Wall Carpeting

This is a tough topic because rugs are meant to be over hard floors, not soft ones. And having rugs over carpeting, and heavy furniture on top of it, can lead to safety issues from buckling as well as structural damage to the rug’s foundation fibers.

We have not found an ideal choice of pad for over carpeting. We used to sell No Muv pad (the same company produces Durahold and this is a “stiffer” version without the rubber side) – but we saw after they redeveloped the product we were taking back about 40% of the pads sold due to them simply not working as well as they used to. So we stopped selling No-Muv (we however sell a large number of Durahold pads – which is an excellent product). It was just too high a dissatisfaction rate for the other pad.

So your option is to try No-Muv by finding a distributor of it, and hope it works for you. And there is only one other option as well:

STICKY PAD (small rugs on soft floors with NO furniture):

Marketed as good for all carpeting. These pads are sold in most home improvement stores. It is sticky on both sides and “holds” the rug flat on the carpeting or hard flooring. It does not protect from wear, but it does keep you from tripping on the rug. It also provides a barrier for rugs on carpeting in case you worry your rug will discolor the carpeting underneath. And it does offer some support for light furnishings because it holds the rug “taut” and more firm, which does help. This pad is cheap, and you can only use it once, so buy a few at a time. It can also damage your flooring, so use with caution. For rugs over carpeting it just keeps you from tripping and getting rug burns.

5 Reasons to Prioritize Padding!

If you love your rug, protect it.
The reason we are so persistent with making sure you have pad, is because we have seen what happens when you don’t… Below are five reasons you should have a pad under your area rug.

  1. Safety: No matter where the rug is placed (on carpet or hardwood or etc), a pad keeps the rug in place to prevent slips and pulls
  2. Preservation: A pad extends the life of your rug by preventing the fibers from being crushed. The pad acts as a type of buffer between the hard surface below and the rug above. It also absorbs most of the grinding action cause by footsteps and works to protect the rug itself from wear
  3. Cleanliness: A pad allows for easier vacuuming and also allows some of the fine sand particles to sift through the rug rather than collecting inside.
  4. Protection: Very important! A pad prevents dye transfer, marring, staining, and scratching to the floor or carpeting beneath.
  5. Comfort: A pad adds cushioning softness underfoot.

A little about our most popular rug pad:

This pad is the ONLY rug pad that prevents slipping on the top and bottom, keeping your rug in place on the pad and on the floor.

You will notice thermal-set ridges in the felt surface running in multiple directions – These are meant to prevent lateral movement of your rug in any direction. The ridges grab to your rug and prevent it from slipping on the actual pad. Most others have a smooth surface that allows the rug to slip and shift.

A unique “Hexagonal” design is set within the natural rubber to offer maximum grip on any floor, making for the most effective non slip function to keep your rug in place at all times. The raised pattern within the rubber also creates an airflow between the pad and floor to allow your floor to breath, as well as to prevent moisture build-up under the pad.

This, our rug pad of choice, is made in the USA and contains felt and only natural solid rubber, it is completely safe for hardwood, laminate, tile, concrete, heated, vinyl and all types of floors and finishes.
