Outdoor Cushion Cleaning & Storage

Fog, rain and pollen leave more in a patio cushion than a hose can reach. We clean outdoor cushions properly, dry them through, and store them across San Francisco if you've nowhere to keep them.

Outdoor Cushions Get Dirtier Than They Look

Outdoor cushions live in conditions indoor furniture never sees, and most of the damage is invisible until you clean one and set it next to one you haven't.

Moisture is the real problem here. Fog and damp air get into the foam and stay there, so a cushion that feels dry on the outside can still be wet in the middle. That's what causes the musty smell, and it's where mildew starts.

Dust, pollen, spills and bird droppings do the rest. None of it means the cushions are finished. Most of it comes out.

Why Not Just Hose Them Down?

Most people try this first, and it's the reason a lot of cushions end up worse.

A hose pushes water straight into the foam, and a standard cushion takes days to dry from the inside. Put it back damp and you've built the exact conditions mildew needs. A pressure washer also breaks down the fibers and strips the factory water-repellent finish, so the cushion soaks up more water than it did before.

We wash covers and fill separately where the construction allows, extract the water, and dry everything through.

Why homeowners choose mother nature's cleaning

We dry them properly

This is most of the job. A cushion that goes back damp will smell within a week.

Honest condition assessment

We tell you what cleaning can improve, and when fading or mildew staining is permanent.

Fabric-specific methods

Sunbrella, printed polyester and olefin all clean differently. We check what you have first.

We test before we clean

It takes five minutes and it's what prevents an expensive mistake.

We come and get them

No hauling wet cushions across town. We collect and deliver.

Storage if you need it

If you've got nowhere to keep them through the wet months, we'll hold them.

The right care for every outdoor fabric

Rug Cleaning Services
Sunbrella and solution-dyed acrylic

The color runs all the way through the fiber rather than sitting on the surface, which is why these hold up so well outdoors. They tolerate a thorough clean.

Printed polyester

Common on cheaper cushions. The pattern is printed on the surface rather than dyed through, so it fades faster and lifts if you scrub it. We use a gentler cleaner and a lighter touch.

Sling and mesh seating

The tight mesh used on sling chairs and loungers, where the fabric is stretched over the frame instead of being a separate cushion. It cleans up well, but the frame and the fabric need different treatment.

Olefin and polypropylene

Holds its color well in sun, but it doesn't like heat. Hot water or a hot dryer will shrink it or leave the surface looking shiny and flattened, so we keep temperatures down.

Older and unlabeled cushions

Plenty of cushions have no tag left. We test a hidden area first and work conservatively from what the fabric tells us.

What Cleaning Fixes, and What It Doesn't

We'd rather tell you before we arrive, than after we've charged you.

Cleaning won't fix
Cleaning usually handles

Sun fading, because the color is gone rather than covered

Embedded dirt, dust and pollen

Staining left behind after mildew has been growing a long time, which sits in the fiber

Musty and stale smells from trapped moisture

Fabric that's gone thin or brittle from years of UV

Food, drink and general spills

Foam that has broken down inside and no longer holds shape

Bird droppings and pet accidents

Zippers, seams and piping that have failed

Surface mold and mildew growth

If your cushions are in the red list, we'll say so before you book, and sometimes the honest answer is that new covers cost less than cleaning. Send a photo to info@mothernaturescleaning.com and we'll tell you what we think.

How It Works: Pickup, Drop-off and Turnaround

Cushions are cleaned at our San Rafael facility, not on your patio. They need drying time and equipment that doesn't travel. Most San Francisco customers book a pickup so they don't make the trip.

  1. Getting started

Call or send photos with a rough count. We can usually quote from that, and we'll flag anything borderline before you commit.

  2. Getting them to us

Most people book a pickup. You can also drop them off at 41 Belvedere St Ste 5, San Rafael. Pickup starts at $99.

  3. While we have them

Turnaround is usually [XX days]. You get a return date when we collect, and we call if anything changes.

  4. Getting them back

We deliver them wrapped and dry, or you collect. Storing with us? You don't see them again until you want them.

Seasonal Storage

Most people here have no garage and nowhere sensible to keep patio cushions through the wet months.

We clean them, dry them fully, wrap them, and hold them until you want them back, then deliver them ready to use when the weather turns.

What's Inside the Cushion Matters Too

The cover gets the attention, but the fill is usually where the smell is.

Most cushions use standard foam, which soaks up water like a sponge and can take days to dry all the way through. Better outdoor cushions use dry-fast foam, which has open pores so water runs straight out of it. Some are filled with polyester wadding instead, which mats down flat once it's been soaked a few times.

If your cushion has a zippered cover, we can usually treat the cover and the fill separately, which gets a much better result on odor. If it's sewn closed, we work with what's there and we'll tell you what that means for the outcome.

Our Process

Inspect and Test

We identify the fabric, check the fill and the cover construction, and test a hidden area before anything else happens. This is also where we tell you if a piece isn't worth cleaning.

Pre-Treatment

Mildew, stains and odor sources are treated first and given time to work. Bird droppings and pet accidents get treated separately from general soil.

Deep Clean

Covers and fill are washed separately where the construction allows. Full extraction rather than rinse and drip, so we're pulling water out rather than leaving it in the foam.

Drying

Cushions are dried all the way through, not just to the touch. This is the step that decides whether they smell in a month, and it's the reason cleaning happens at our facility rather than on your patio.

Protector and Wrapping

The factory water-repellent finish wears off over a few seasons. We can reapply it, which is worth doing on cushions that live outdoors year-round. Then everything is wrapped for delivery or storage.

Outdoor Cushion Cleaning for Commercial Properties

We clean outdoor cushions for restaurant patios, hotel terraces, rooftop decks, HOA common areas and apartment amenity spaces, and we work around your service hours so a patio isn't out of use during business.

For accounts with a lot of pieces we can run this on a schedule, so cushions get cleaned before the season rather than when someone complains.

Tell us how many pieces and where, and we'll quote the job.
